Description

Ndunda

Region

The Ndunda coffee mill is located at an altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Kenya in the cultivated areas of Embu County.

These producers are very small. They average 200 coffee trees, grown alongside other crops such as macadamia nuts, potatoes, corn, beans, and tea. Some of these trees are planted to provide shade for the growing coffee plantations. Ndunda Coffee Factory sits on red volcanic soil, which, along with organic matter, is a determining factor in the quality of this coffee.

Process

The area experiences an annual rainfall of 1,200mm at 1,600m above sea level and enjoys cool temperatures of 12-24°C.

After being carefully selected, the ripe cherries are taken to the processing plant by small producers, where they are weighed and then processed using the washed processing method. The wastewater used in processing is disposed of in soaking pits and is also recirculated for preservation.

After pulping, the coffee is fermented overnight to break down the sugars, before being cleaned and soaked for another 24 hours. This process increases the protein and amino acids, which in turn increases the complexity of the acidity and clarity in the cup.

The coffee is then spread on raised beds. The drying time on the beds depends on the weather, ambient temperature, and the volume processed, and can take 7 to 15 days in total.

Ndunda Coffee Factory

Ndunda Coffee Factory receives assistance from the Coffee Management Services (CMS) group, which directly helps producers improve their productivity and quality through training and education programs.

Its goal is to establish a transparent and trust-based relationship with its small producers. It also aims to ensure sustained industry growth by helping producers improve their quality, thereby improving the premiums paid and ultimately having a positive impact on their quality of life.

From funds reserved from the previous year's harvest, cooperative members can pre-finance school fees, access to agricultural inputs, and funds for emergency needs.

The Ndunda coffee mill is run by a factory manager who oversees all activities within the factory. Along with other staff members, they perform tasks such as weighing coffee, sorting and grading coffee, paying farmers, and addressing farmer complaints.
