Description
Lalesa – Ethiopia, grown with passion and dedication in Gedeb.
Origin and Terrain
Land acquired by Ephthan in July 2023. The warehouse and beds (there are a total of 350) were built in September 2023. .
The farm covers 3.5 hectares and is located in a high-altitude region, ideal for growing specialty coffee. The growing season runs from November to January, taking advantage of optimal climatic conditions for bean development.
Employment and Community
The farm employs 20 permanent workers year-round, increasing to 250 during the harvest season. This practice not only ensures efficient farm management but also provides employment and economic stability for the local community.
In addition, a nursery for rural children will be opened in Gedeb, allowing local women farmers to participate in our Ama Commitment program, fostering social and economic development.
Cultivation Process
Coffee cultivation is carried out naturally under trees, primarily Ensete (known as the false banana tree), which provide shade and a perfect microclimate for coffee development. This method contributes to the biodiversity and sustainability of the local ecosystem.
Beneficiation Process
The highest quality is guaranteed by purchasing the best cherries from local farmers. The coffee cherries are dried on raised beds for 12-15 days. This process is carefully controlled to ensure each batch reaches its peak. flavor potentialLocal women are responsible for hand-picking the green beans, ensuring a careful and uniform selection.
Storage and Transportation
In Addis Ababa, coffee is stored at Moplace, Gerji. Once processed, the coffee is transported by train to Djibouti, from where it is exported to various international destinations. This efficient transportation system helps maintain the coffee's freshness and quality throughout its journey.
Finance and Sustainability
An initial payment is made upon receipt of the coffee. Financing has been adjusted this year due to the NBE's policy to control inflation, thus ensuring fair and sustainable trade for all involved.
Commitment to the Community
In our ongoing commitment to the community, we have expanded the Ama Commitment program. We plan to build a water tank for flotation (elimination of Quakers) and increase the number of drying sheds. We will also grow other crops on our land, allowing local people not only to grow crops but also to sell them at the local market.
Future Perspectives
We are committed to innovation and continuous improvement. In the coming years, we plan to expand our facilities and community programs, always with the goal of offering the highest quality coffee and positively contributing to the development of the region.
